Down-the-hole drilling is a technique where the drill bit is mounted at the end of a drill string and driven by a pneumatic hammer. This method is efficient for drilling through hard rock formations encountered in surface mining. The hammer continuously strikes the bit, creating downward force and breaking the rock. The broken rock fragments are then flushed out of the hole using compressed air or water.
